Professor is an NPC in Vigil the Longest Night. NPCs are characters that can be interacted with or are shown in the game. NPCs are characters that add contrast to the game's lore where they provide information, some are categorized as quest givers, while others are categorized as Merchants whom you can trade with or request for certain services.

Professor Information

On the surface the Professor was a kind, well-read religious man, and was liked and respected by many in Maye town. In truth, the Professor was obsessed with an idea of the evolution of the human race at any cost. In his attempts to find a way for a person to surpass their human nature the Professor studied many ancient texts and rituals, and together with heathens performed all kinds of cruel experiments on animals and humans in a hidden cave not far from Maye Town.

One of the Professor's victims was a local girl named Bruna, on whom he secretly experimented by feeding her the Crimson. Unlike most of other test subjects Bruna managed to maintain her human form, which prompted the Professor to perform the ritual on her. In order to lure Bruna to the Secret Cave the Professor forged a letter confessing his crimes for her to find, and kidnapped her when she tried to sneak into the cave to find more evidence. The ritual, however, was a failure: turned out that the Professor mistranslated one of ancient texts, mistaking the word that meant "sisters" for "couple". Although Bruna's piety allowed her mutation to go further than other test subjects, she was never destined to ascend and instead was turned into a monstrous Brood Mother.

The Professor, saddened by his failure, planned to leave Maye Town and continue his experiments elsewhere, but turned out that another girl, Daisy, followed the Professor and saw Bruna's turning ritual. He chased her all the way to the Catacombs, where Daisy's sister Dephil finally found him. The Professor managed to convince Dephil to abandon the Vigilants and join his cause. Together with other heathens they attempted to perform the ritual inside of the Giantwood, on Daisy this time, but when there was only one step left Dephil had a sudden change of heart and escaped. Daisy disappeared as well. Enraged by Dephil's betrayal, with nowhere else left to run, the Professor "threw himself into the arms of the Sealed Other God in the Giantwood" and turned into a monster called Scholar of the Sacred Wood. Terrified of his new form, Vigilants, Maye Guard, and Maye priests joined their forces to seal the Scholar of the Sacred Wood and his supporters within the Giantwood, trapping themselves inside the tree as well in the process. The seal binding the tree was separated into three parts and given to respective members of the same groups to be taken as far from each other as possible, but for various reasons the crystals never left Maye town's vicinity.

Centuries later, a Vigilant named Leila gathers the long lost parts of the seal. Depending on the player's choice, the Scholar of the Sacred Wood is defeated either by her, or by the Doctor. The Professor's notes are collected by the Doctor's assistant Nordell. Turns out that before his death the Professor had managed to find the correct ratio of the Crimson and the Pale Red required for the ritual, which in turn allows the Doctor to finally complete it.
